Our Activities
We run a range of programmes, both hosted on our estate as well as off-site. Not only do we run activities as part of our residential and camping programmes, you can also book activity days such as for birthdays and parties. For more information, read more below.
Off-site activities
Canoeing & KAYAKING
Located close to the River Tyne, Broomley is able to provide fantastic experiences in a range of river conditions. Expedition trips further afield can also be organised.

Ghyll Scrambling & Gorge Walking
Ashgill Falls is an ideal location for ghyll scrambling and gorge walking.
You can Abseil down Ashgill Force waterfall, jump into deep water pools, scrambling and sliding the shallow areas between them before finishing up with a challenging climb up a waterfall. This is an exhilarating experience for anyone no matter how old you are and is an exciting day out. |
MINE EXPLORATION
Local mine systems are used such as Tyne Bottom and Smallcleugh mines. Trips into these mines can be tailored to suit your sense of adventure (anything from 1 to 4 hours underground!).
We use highly experienced leaders who can offer a great wealth of knowledge. The mines are close to Ashgill where we also do gorge walking, so why not make a day of it... mining in the morning and gorge walking in the afternoon! |
WALKINGExplore the varied landscapes of Northumberland, from the Roman Wall to the beautiful coast lines. Trips can be organised by us to suit your needs. Educational days out can also be organised.

BOULDERING & wEASELINGTry out bouldering at one of our lovely scenic venues. For those that want to do a bit of exploring, why not try a bit of weaseling. This is using the natural environment of the rocks and boulders, to slide and wriggle under. This is great fun.

rock climbing & abseilingThere are several ideal group crags near Broomley Grange including the Great Wanney at West Woodburn, East Woodburn crag and Peel Crag on Hadrian's Wall.
You can easily spend the whole day climbing, abseiling, bouldering and weaseling (crawling underneath boulders). |
ON-site activities
abseiling
Abseiling can be done on our specially built climbing wall or off-site from a crag at Great Wannie or East Woodburn.

archery
We have a specially built area for Archery which is fully supervised by an instructor. This is also used for Air Rifle Shooting.

Obstacle courseThe assault course consists of high walls, overhand bars, cargo nets, balance beams and jumps. We can also do a team event where you have to get everyone as a team across it without touching the ground! The only things you can use are the planks of wood you are given.

camp craft
On our 'Camp Craft' course we will teach you various skills and techniques outlined below.
Fire Skills : Including fire safety; making a small fire from natural materials using a fire steel; basic cooking; foraging knowledge; how to make and use a Swedish fire log. Shelter Building : Using tarpaulins and natural materials; learning where and how to site a camp Most Camp Craft is based in our woodland near a bonfire site that accommodates large numbers sitting on benches. Bring your guitar and voices, to make music whilst we help you toast marshmallows! We can run more advanced courses upon request which are taught by military personnel. |
climbing wall
On the climbing wall there are 6 roped climbs each with different routes and difficulty.
These climbs are suitable for all ages and abilities, and once you get to the top you get lowered back down. We also have a Bouldering wall section for traversing to improve climbing skill, or just to have fun at a low level without the need for ropes. |
crate stacking
Working in pairs on a rope, building a tower of crates as high as you can - it's all about teamwork!
This is a fun team building game needing good communication skills and planning and can be done individually or in pairs. |
Jacobs ladder
With 'Jacobs Ladder' your challenge is to climb up the wobbly 25 feet ladder in ones or twos, get over the top and back down the other side. This is great fun and is a good team building game.

log walk
The 'Log Walk' is a big challenge for all ages.
Try to walk across a round log high up in the trees without holding onto anything apart from your harnessed rope! |
mid-ropes
With the 'Mid Ropes' course you will Walk along logs, around trees, and across rope bridges and scramble nets, all joined by wire ropes and 15ft off the ground...
This is exciting for all age groups. |
night line
The 'Night Line' is a very good team building and trust exercise.
Wearing blacked out goggles, your group must navigate Broomley woodland, by following a rope and communicating with each other to overcome obstacles in changing terrain. There are two courses, a dry one and an extreme one, prepare to get dirty and wet on the extreme one! |
orienteering
There is a large orienteering course within the grounds of Broomley Grange which incorporates over 40 markers and challenges your navigation and map skills.
The course size can be tailored to suit the level of experience of the group and time is taken to teach map reading and orienteering skills with our trained instructors. You can achieve your National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) certification whilst at Broomley Grange. |
problem solving
We have a large number of problem solving tasks, and games for all ages which are located around the grounds. Use them as icebreakers and team builders or just to have a really good laugh!
Examples are 3D Spider's Web, Plank swing, Tree traverse, Tube dash, Sling dash, Log lift, Grass skis, Water Pipes. |
rope confidence course
The 'Rope Confidence' course is a low level activity and needs no head for heights, but is challenging in many other ways.
You have to try and tackle 12 obstacles including a swing bridge, a wobbly log, traversing a cargo net, crossing swinging tyres and lots more. |
survival skills
You will learn from army survival instructors how to live out in the wilds using just a few basic tools.
You'll be taught how to a light fire, build shelters, collect water in all climates, catch food, the best chances of rescue and lots more. |
team building
Your team building activities program can be tailored to your needs.
You can choose from a wide selection of activities which range from simple to more complex tasks. |
tree climbing
We have range of trees (up to 40ft mature oak) to climb which cater for all ages and abilities.

tunnels
Get in our tunnel system and navigate underground in dark twisty tunnels.
(Don’t worry there are various escape hatches!). |
water slide
New for 2019. Our 100m slippery slide is faster and wetter. This is great to use with our inflatable rings or just get wet and soapy. Great fun for adults and kids alike.

Birthday parties
Why not celebrate your Birthday at Broomley Grange and invite your friends to an Activity Party? Members of your party should ideally be over 8 years old, but there is no upper age limit as long you are prepared to be young at heart! We now offer printed party invitations for you to collect and distribute.
We also cater for adult parties/groups including stag and hen parties. We have a wide range of exciting and challenging activities, from a climbing and abseiling tower, high ropes, cargo nets to tunnels, obstacle courses, archery and team building/problem solving.
We can arrange whatever you require, be it on site or more challenging off site activities such as mining, canoeing, climbing or gorge walking.
Our instructors are qualified, highly motivated and experienced. They give encouragement and help make your party fun, exciting and memorable!
The party times are for a morning session 10 am to 1 pm and afternoon session 1.30pm to 4.30pm.
(Winter - October to March inclusive - afternoon session is 1.00pm to 4.00pm)
